Bascand Wines is a renowned winery in New Zealand, exporting wine to China and many other countries.
After five-years of exporting to China, it is about to ship its first 20-foot container-load, holding more than 13,000 bottles to the country. The container was said to be “a breakthrough”, according to Gwyn Thomas, GM of Bascand Wines, after he and Director Andrew Bascand have visited China as part of a Wellington business and cultural delegation in June.
New Zealand news reported that Bascand executives were feted by Guo Jinlong, Beijing’s mayor, who also hosted functions of tasting Bascand wines. According to Bascand’s website, the wines have received accolades from Chinese guests.
Mr. Bascand said, “These functions were landmark events for New Zealand wine and Bascand Wines. The People’s Republic of China is a growth market for the company and this event coincides with the shipping of our first 20 foot container of wine into China.” He also told the media that the mayor really loved their Pinot Noir.
And his objective in China was “to be admired for our wines and trusted for doing business with”.
Mr Thomas said Chinese wine drinkers had historically been partial to reds, but younger people were turning to fruity aromatics such as Riesling and Pinot Gris. In general, wine-drinking habits were more sophisticated now than a few years ago.
According to their info, Bascand will send about 2,000 cases to China over this year – about 90 per cent whites, mainly aromatics, and the rest Pinot Noir.
Established in 1998, Bascand Wines has an annual production of over 20,000 cases of wine and export markets now account for 50 percent of sales. The company also exports to Australia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Hong Kong and Thailand.
Bascand’s wines have also been selected for VIP hospitality at New Zealand’s Shanghai Expo
