Wine in Indonesia

Wine consumers in Indonesia include wealthy Indonesians, the expatriate community and the tourist market. Owing to its strong tourist trade, Bali accounts for the highest volume.

New World wines are very popular with Indonesian consumers as they are seen as providing value for money. Australian and Chilean wines in particular are very popular.

French wines are still perceived as being the highest quality and are more often purchased by wealthier consumers. Wine is often perceived as a status symbol.

There are a small number of wineries emerging in Indonesia despite the tropical climate. Grapes are harvested year long from ever green vines and can be produced in several vintages per year. There are also a small but emerging number of wine clubs in the country. Indonesia produces significant quantities of herbal wines which are very popular amongst Indonesian consumers.

Market Requirements

Alcohol sales and distribution are strictly controlled and excise duties are high. Alcoholic drinks with an ethanol content greater than 5% may only be retailed and consumed through hotels (3, 4 and 5 star), specified restaurants, bar/pub/night clubs, duty free shops or certain places assigned by a mayor of the district.
