Aussie wine to be opened up to China
news.smh.com.au by 2009-04-18

More Australian wine might make its way onto Chinese tables after Agriculture Minister Tony Burke signed agreements this week to improve access to markets in China and Hong Kong.

Mr Burke signed the two memoranda of understanding (MOU) during a visit to China and Hong Kong this week.

The agreements will gives wine producers a simplified, improved access to both markets, addressing issues including certification and labelling.

"In a country the size of China, a single window to government will make it easier for the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation to help exporters ship wine to this important market," Mr Burke said in a statement.

Australia is also set to benefit from the single point of contact, a key element of both agreements.

Mr Burke said the Hong Kong MOU would help lift Australia's wine profile in Hong Kong.

In the 12 months to March 2009, more than 5.6 million litres of wine worth $40.7 million were exported to Hong Kong, while during the same period exports to China - Australia's largest Asian wine market - totalled $81.2 million.

China is Australia's eighth largest wine export market by volume and fifth largest by value.

While overseas, Mr Burke will also attend the G8 Agricultural Ministers' meeting and Environment Ministers' meeting, in Italy, do discuss global food security and climate change.
