Author-photographer explores China winery

Sherwood photographer and author Janis Miglavs recently traveled to China to research Chinese wineries and returned with a plum assignment.

Miglavs, who specializes in photography and writing about architecture, travel, vineyards and wineries, is the author of the Benjamin Franklin Award-winning book, "Oregon: The Taste of Wine."

He is working on two more books and spent six months researching Chinese wineries and vineyards. Along the way, Miglavs caught the attention of a marketing director who was impressed with his work, Miglavs said.

As a result, he was offered an assignment from a consortium of the Chinese government to photograph an upscale winery and the Penglai wine region. Miglavs, who only knew 20 Chinese words, chronicled his adventure on his blog,
