Do Not Look Down Upon Intelligence Of Chinese
www.wines-info.com by Susan, translator Lily 2006-11-14 12:02:37

Recently, many Chinese vintners told me that they could receive calls from French wineries almost everyday. But they are really not interested in the wines from unknown wineries and those don't have good cost performance at all.

These vintners came to China and intent to exploit new market here in succession. They bought telephone numbers and addresses of imported wine companies and agents, then called them and asked for interviews. Unfortunately, 99% of them came back home without any fruit. French vintners always think that China distributors will and ought to buy their wines as long as their wines are qualified . If they don't purchase their goods, they may complain that Chinese don't understand wine and China market is stagnant. In fact, they were developing in wrong ways.

These recent years, arrogant French have to promote their wines modestly in China. But as the uprising of the new world , accessible wines which own good cost performance are competing keenly with French wines. It is true that France owns great wine , but not all French wine is great.

In 2001, I stayed in Bordeaux, France and found that local associations looked down upon vintners from China mainland. They thought consumers from China mainland couldn't consume wine according to statistics which revealled that importing amount of Hongkong was larger than that of China mainland. Out of their imagination, many imported goods of Hongkong are transitted to China mainland and mainly comsumed here.

At present, Chinese are understanding much more about wine. You shouldn't look down upon Chinese vintners especially those from Shanghai , or you will make a large loss.

[jjefflee]  • I'm Chinese but I really have no stomach for 'patriotic statements' such as those similar to the title of this article: don't look down upon intelligence of chinese. It's this kind of mentality of ours that baffles foreigners - everything can be linked to patriotism, be it sports, business, arts, or whatever. Is it the only way we can interact with people outside? 2007-09-01
[Reidar Ostensen]  • Good Quality = Good Business As a Canadian business man and now living in China, I had the opportunity to operate "Brew-on-Premises" brewery facility system that at this point is not yet realized in China, or for that matter in most part of the world. Based on a unique juice formulation and packaging system, the consept involves getting the customer involved in the actual process, thus according to the govern laws, the customer is exsemted from paying the normal taxes levied on the wine products. (In China the laws will differ.) Actually, the customer involvment in most cases is limited to the selection of the wine, payment (up front) and bottling/labeling/corking of the wine. During my initial beginning of running this business several years ago, my first marketing strategy was focused on the lower to middle consumer market. What I discovered was the the product was utelized by a mutch wider market segment that included high end professionals and even airospace companies that took advantage of the relative low cost, excellent quality and ability to personalize the labeling to be presented as gifts to individual or corporate clients. The facility structure to operate this type of "Micro Winery" is affordable, portable and has the potential of many additional services that will appeal to the Chinese markets. If we can take the "wine -snob" attitude out of the evaluation process when tasting a wine for best taste and quality from wines produced within these "Brew-on-Premises" facilities, we will discover that these products will harmonise nicely with the "western" general taste expectations as well as the Chinese consumer markets. When we considering the fact that these juice blends are supplied by the worlds leading wine juice manufacturing campanies with their company logo on the juice box, the quality assurance meets with most consumers expectations. Bottom line, the Chinese consumer markets are relative open to try new products that they feel contains purity, good taste, is affordable and knows where the origin of juice is comming from. If they are in doubt? invite them into the winery for a "show and tell". 2006-11-15
